One eye open

As I was contorting my body in all kinds of weird ways, trying to get a close-up shot of Max sleeping (again!), he opened one eye and looked at me as if to say, "Must you?"

Oh, fork!

Just messing around with a photo of a single fork in Photoshop... Photo was taken on Friday; I just didn't get it posted until after midnight...

Back in the saddle again...

Today - An abstracty/pattern shot of my son's used caps for his cap gun. I converted the photo to black-and-white and applied an Ink Outlines filter in Photoshop.

Tuesday, 03/24/09 - I had such high hopes for our magnolia tree this spring... There were so many buds! But unfortunately, once the buds started to open, we had a few cold days, and the blossoms were destroyed. Then we had a couple windy days and what we had quickly got blown away...

Max and the Meramec River

Today - I went down to the Meramec River close to our house after dinner tonight, and as I was looking around, a fish splashed in the water. I noticed the ripples in the water and the reflection of the trees on the riverbank in those ripples. Mario doesn't like all the jagged lines in this photo, but that is precisely why I like it...

Friday, 03/20/09 - As one of my friends said, Max certainly is predictable! As am I apparently... Another Friday night shot of Max because I was too uninspired for anything else! Photo shot on Auto setting...

Rustic Tomato Basil Tart

Tonight's dinner - fantastically yummy! Here's the recipe (from my sister, Irene - don't know where she got it):

Rustic Tomato Basil Tart
6 servings (yeah right, more like 3!)

3 lbs med red and yellow tomatoes cut into 1/4 inch slices (This seems like too much, 1.5 lbs is more like it)
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup fresh corn kernels (about 1-2 ears)
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
3 tbsp fat free sour cream
1.5 cup all purpose flour
1/4 c yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup chilled butter, cut into several pieces
1 tbsp yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup thinly sliced fresh basil, divided
1/3 cup (1.5 oz) shredded fontina cheese (or smoked provala; gruyere also works as a substitute)
1 tbsp chopped fresh oregano
2 tbsp all purpose flour
1/4 tsp cracked black pepper

1. Arrange tomato slices in a single layer on several layers of paper towels; sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt. Let stand 20 minutes; blot dry with paper towels.

2. Place corn, lemon juice and sour cream in a food processor; process until smooth.

3. Combine 1.5 cup flour, 1/4 cup cornmeal and 1/2 tsp salt in a large bowl; stir with a whisk. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives (or a fork) until mixture resembles course meal. Add corn mixture; stir until a soft dough forms. Knead gently 3-4 times.

4. Slightly overlap 2 16” sheets of plastic wrap on a slightly damp surface. Place dough on plastic wrap, press into a 6” circle. Cover with 2 additional sheets of overlapping plastic. Roll dough, still covered, into a 14” circle. Place on a large baking sheet in freezer for 10 minutes or until plastic wrap can be easily removed. (Be sure to use a good, heavy duty plastic wrap)

5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

6. Line baking sheet with parchment paper; sprinkle paper with 1 tbsp cornmeal. Remove 2 sheets (1 side) of wrap from dough. Place dough, wrap side up, on baking sheet. Remove remaining wrap.

7. Combine 1/4 cup basil, cheese and oregano in a small bowl. In a separate small bowl, combine 2 tbsp flour and 1/2 tsp salt. Arrange cheese mixture on dough, leaving 1.5” border. Sift 1 tbsp flour mixture over cheese mixture. Arrange 1/2 of tomatoes over cheese and flour mixtures. Sift remaining flour mixture over tomatoes, top with remaining tomatoes. Fold edges of dough toward center, press to seal.

8. Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until crust is browned. Let stand 10 minutes, sprinkle with 1/4 cup basil and black pepper.

One of these days...

...I'll be organized and on top of things so I don't have to post multiple photos in one day to get caught up...!

This was taken at the supermarket this afternoon. Not exactly what I was going for, but I'll have to think about the image I had in my mind some more. Maybe I'll cart my camera with me to the store another day...

A new experiment!

I recently discovered a whole new world of photography I didn't know existed - TTV, or "through-the-viewfinder", photos. Basically, a photo is taken through the viewfinder of another camera, and some really interesting photos can be produced with this method. (Searching flickr for "ttv" will bring up a ga-ZILLION examples, if you're interested.) So I had to try it! I bid on an old Kodak Duaflex camera on ebay and paid a mere $11.60 for my Duaflex (and that included shipping!). I have yet to build the necessary light/reflection-blocking contraption, but I tried a shot tonight, covering the two cameras with a black cloth. This is a photo of the light fixture in our dining room, and I applied the "Urban Acid" action to the photo in Photoshop (downloaded from here: http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm#Urban_Acid) to give it the green tint. Mind you, this isn't the most exciting subject, but I was interested in the process tonight more than the subject... Once I make my light-blocking contraption, expect to see more of these from me!!

The past few days...again...

I've gotten a couple days behind on my posts again...

Today - This is an experiment I wanted to try based on a photo I saw (I cannot claim the idea as my own, but hopefully it'll help get my creative juices flowing!). I laid out one of Mario's wild-printed shirts on the floor, put some drinking glasses on top of the shirt, and placed a casserole dish on top of the glasses. I filled the casserole dish halfway with water and then drizzled some oil in the water. Focusing on the oil, here's the result! I'll have to try this again (or something similar, maybe) once I purchase the next item on my wish list: a macro lens...

Wednesday, March 11 - I've decided that on days when I'm either totally uninspired to shoot or I've almost forgotten to take a photo for the day, I am going to take a picture of our dog, Max, wherever and in whatever state he may be. I wonder how many of these shots I'll have by the end of the year...

Miriam... again!

Miriam has such expressive eyes - and she's such a fun and funny girl! - it's great to photograph her. So when she's willing to be my subject, I take advantage of it! In this photo she's in the tree in our front yard, and Mario had just gotten home from work. I practically begged her to stay in the tree for just a few more shots, and I caught this one of her as she watched Mario pulling his car into the driveway.

Getting caught up

I've taken photos the past few days but am just now getting around to posting them - it's been crazy around here this week. And for that reason, these photos are more snapshots than anything I've actually thought about or worked on... One of these days...

Today - I went out to brunch this morning with a couple friends as a belated birthday celebration, and one of the ladies brought me an orchid. I figure before I kill it (my green thumb has apparently been amputated), I'll photograph it for posterity...
